Su Youpeng “Huan Zhu” 10 Year Reunion"

In front of the camera lens, Su Youpeng’s each move and expression doesn’t have
any trace of the “guai guai hu”; growing stubbles, revealing a touch of melancholy;
the few unruly strands of hair on the forehead, showing a touch of neglect; the cool
look, expressing a kind of self-control; the fashionable clothes, displaying an
uncommon air. This is the new image that Youpeng displays to us. It is “new”,
because we are too familiar with his “xiao guai”-like, bright and cheerful smiles. In
front of us is a Youpeng that many would still need an acceptance period. But Youpeng
himself is already used to it, even likes it, because he feels that this is closer to the
real him. In real life, nobody can be always cheerful no matter what. The current Su
Youpeng, is a man of 34 who has experienced fame in his youth, then returned to null,
in life and career’s ups and downs. “Ke cha”, following the shutter noise of the
photographer, Youpeng has been framed into different still lifes. Rapidly moving,
revealing an animated and real Su Youpeng.
“In the past year, I’ve completely changed le”
In the past year, Youpeng intentionally slowed down the pace of his work. He wanted
to let himself have more time to appreciate and to enjoy life.
Therefore, he had the opportunities to meet a lot of old friends and old class mates.
Those are happy and beautiful memories that he can never forget.
“One night, it struck my fancy to ask a few friends to go strolling on the sea shore, even
took some great pictures under the street lights. Really haven’t been that crazy in a long
time le.” Youpeng immersed himself in the scenes of that day. One can imagine
how exciting it was.
We cannot lack passion, especially at a certain age.
My realization.
Youpeng concurred. “I don’t like to put myself in a box, it’s hard to find something
that interests me nowadays; it’s hard to be able to spend time with a few very dear
friends. Especially the kind of risk taking when we were young, really haven’t
experienced that in a long time le.”
At times, freely letting go is a wonderful thing. But there bounds to be a barrier
between people, especially for celebrities. They would consciously lock up their real
self, because for them that is a self preservation instinct.
“Many people around me would remind me to protect myself, but I feel that I’m a more
passionate person.” I can feel Youpeng’s passionate, amiable and easy-going nature.
Each interview always allows me to understand him a bit more, so we already regard
each other as friends. What surprises me is that after all these years, he can still
clearly recount the details of our first interview.
Last time we met, it was also at year end. But I felt that his spirit was low – in both his
career and social life. This time, I feel that his mood is much more cheerful, always
happy while talking.
“I feel that in the past year, I’ve completely changed le”, he said with deep feeling.
I said it has to do with his slowing down to appreciate life. In the colorful daily life,
suddenly one can relax; the bow is no longer high strung; the mood will naturally be
brighter. Attaining fame in youth, has brought him much fame and fortune, but at the
same time, he has lost much freedom and carefree days belonging to those of the
same age. Like a spinning top, it can’t even stop for a moment.
“Really, this expand and then slacken is really too important. Now I suddenly feel
free, especially since just signing with the company in mainland China, having a new
platform, full of ambition for the future.” Youpeng smiled brightly, a very familiar smile.
However, we can rarely see him smiling like this recently, perhaps it’s because of his
age; he always wants to let his image more closely match his age. Recently, he even
changed his persona, growing stubbles, with cool hair style. Especially when taking
pictures, he rarely smiles, with a very profound look. However, I noticed that when he
chatted about the meeting with his friends, he smiled happily without any reservation.
I could tell that his happiness was sincere at this time.
”Meeting old friends again, do you feel that everybody has changed much ?”
“I feel that people in the showbiz world are not easy to grow old, appearance doesn’t
change much, but there are some doctor or IT friends, looking like puffed up
balloons, ha ha !”
“Try to imagine, if you finished university and worked in engineering, your field of
study, then what would it be like ?”
Youpeng was thinking, still hasn’t replied yet. I was already laughing : “Can’t imagine
it ! Maybe you would also become a balloon le, towing 2 little kids behind you.”
“Maybe due to everyone’s expectations being not the same, so life’s focal point is not
the same.” Youpeng continued to add.
“What’s your life’s focal point ?”
“Hoping my career has new breakthroughs; must do better in many work”
“Is earning money important ?” Youpeng’s family was not well off. For many years,
part of his income was to provide for his family and to pay for his brother’s tuition.
“Earning money is no longer a high priority. Interest in work is more important now.
When I was still accumulating experiences a few years ago, people wouldn’t expect
too much of me; but following the better results, others’ expectation for me is also higher.
So it’s even harder to make choices le. Slowing down the pace of work and relaxing is
also to let myself prepare to be in the best shape for work.”
“Want to work out to become a hunk”
When not working, Youpeng spends most of his time at home; celebrating new year,
“home” is his only choice. “I feel very strange this year for not going home, as if
there’s some unfinished business.” said Youpeng with a puzzled look.
“What do you do when you’re not working ?” Stars’ daily life always makes people
curious.
Youpeng started smiling before saying : “You might not believe it. I want to work out
to become a hunk !” Seeing my startled look, Youpeng was laughing so much he
almost couldn’t continue. “But it wasn’t successful. Because of movie shooting
schedule, it’s hard to keep it up; I work out because I want to build muscle mass.”
A few years back, Youpeng went to Greece to shoot his pictorials; he has already
shown us the results of his work out routine, it was really good. “At the time, I
persevered for a month. The process was really quite painful. Exercising has many
types; to build muscle mass requires heavy weight lifting. At that time, the only
satisfaction was looking at myself in the shower …” Not that I want to discourage
Youpeng, I believe that no matter how he exercises, he won’t ever become a hunk !
In the past year, Youpeng has added a new outlet for his emotions; that’s his blog.
For him, there’s no doubt that he writes in his own blog. “How can someone else
understands my mood ! How can someone else write my feelings !” Writing his own
blog, Youpeng usually expresses his feelings when he’s down or lonely; he usually
doesn’t feel like writing when he’s happy; there’s not much to write anyway !
“Sunshine and feeling of happiness are very hard to describe.” Youpeng sighed. “Just
like I’m very happy these last 2 days, but it’s very hard to describe with words. So I
haven’t updated my blog.” Judging from this, we can deduce Youpeng’s mood from the
frequency of his blog’s update. If he continues not to write blog, it means he’s in a very
good mood; there’s no need for us to be concerned then.
“Do you pay attention to the hit rate of your blog ?”
“I do, I always go check during the day the hit rate and messages; I want to know
everyone’s reaction.”
“If the messages are negative, do you mind ?”
“If it makes sense, I’ll listen, otherwise I won’t. (Will you delete them ?) I’m too lazy to
delete them. You can maliciously attack me, but I won’t be affected; I’m already used to
it all these years. “Walk your own path, let others talk !” This saying used to be
meaningless to me; now I keep it in my heart. Because I can’t make everybody like
everything that I do; I also can’t please everybody; the only thing I can control is to do
my best. I could change my mindset; I would change to a different viewpoint to look at
things; I won’t be stuck there.”
Talking about growing up, Youpeng couldn’t help but remember a few scenes from the
shooting of “HZGG” 10 years ago. Time flying by; 10 years later, those naïve faces of
yesterday have become big stars today. Not too long ago, Youpeng, Xinru and Zhou Jie
met at Zhao Wei’s home, dubbing it “Huan Zhu 10 year reunion”. At the reunion, they
recounted many past stories as well as telling many secrets. Apparently, shooting TV
series can be done as part 1 and 2. Youpeng feels that the current Zhao Wei seems
more relaxed. Xinru is more and more “woman” le. “They said I was more boring
before, more reserved. Now I’m more willing to express myself, also more
humorous.” Youpeng said.

What touches Youpeng is that through all these years, there are so many people, old
and young, males and females, white collar and blue collar, who have been following
him, and growing up with him.
“Youpeng, I grew up listening to your songs.” He often hears about similar phrases at
different occasions; some of those speaking these words are no longer very young.
“These kinds of words really touch me. Don’t have to talk about somebody else, even
myself when I listen to Xiao Hu Dui’s songs on KTV, I could become emotional,
reminiscing those unforgettable years.”
“Xiao Hu Dui could make people remember lots of memories. Did anybody tell you
stories ?”
“Yes. There was an MC of a show in Shanghai who told me how he braved the rain to
buy my cassettes … there are many such stories.” Youpeng himself acknowledged
that he was the pop idol of that generation.
Indisputably, Xiao Hu Dui influenced a whole generation. Then “HZGG”, Du Fei, Zhang
Wuji influenced again another generation. This is also the reason why Youpeng’s fans
have no age and no generation barriers.
“To be able to grow up with 2 generations of people, I really cherish it. Like you said,
not every artist can achieve this. Now I have to step onto my career’s next 10 years,
hoping to bring out new substance and feeling to everyone; it is also my way of
repaying everyone’s love.”
Indeed in the midst of this “repaying” process, Youpeng continues to improve, to raise
the bar, to grow up. Although we can’t see too much the marks left by the ages on
his “baby face”, but Youpeng really feels that his heart and mind have matured.
“Comparing against oneself is most accurate.” He had once tried to make himself
look “older” through his look; he even forbade others from calling him “xiao guai”. But
when he really felt his “growing up”, he simply accepted all these. It’s because he
could see from this his own exploitable potentials.
“Acting as Du Fei was a breakthrough for me; it was also an exploitation of my characters.”
“Which aspects of yourself do you feel there are unexplored potentials ?”
After thinking for a bit, he replied smilingly : “The bad side, I welcome all directors
to exploit it.”
Talking about growing up, Youpeng couldn’t help but remember a few scenes from
the shooting of “HZGG” 10 years ago. Time flying by; 10 years later, those naïve faces
of yesterday have become big stars today. Not too long ago, Youpeng, Xinru and Zhou
Jie met at Zhao Wei’s home, dubbing it “Huan Zhu 10 year reunion”. At the reunion,
they recounted many past stories as well as telling many secrets. Apparently, shooting
TV series can be done as part 1 and 2. “At the time, we received unfair treatments but
we dared not say. Now we can freely discuss them.” Youpeng said smilingly.
“At that time, we were all being ordered to go here, go there. The only thing that made
them feel balanced was that I, Su Youpeng was also being ordered about even though
having a bit of fame.”
“Then didn’t you feel unbalanced in your heart ?”
“I just quit school then, facing a career that just returned to null. By lowering one’s
expectations, then I no longer felt unfair.”
“Ten years have passed. Do you feel that Zhao Wei and Lin Xinru have changed much ?”
“We all grew up in our own path. The current Zhao Wei is more relaxed. Xinru is more
and more “woman” le.”
“They talked about your changes ?”
“They said that I was more boring before, more reserved. Now I’m more willing to
express myself, also more humorous.”
Seeing old friends, Youpeng’s deepest impression was “wine is richer with age, friends
are better with old ones.”
Mentioning about Zhao Wei, I couldn’t help but to ask Youpeng to confirm a rumor.
“Rumor said that you had special feelings for Zhao Wei …”
“Our relationship is very good.” Youpeng said smilingly. Then he said more
seriously : “Fictional series but real feelings ba. We are friends who have all endured
hardship together. After the series was finished, we really had a relationship of good
friends.”
Youpeng frankly said that when shooting “Huan zhu”, nobody could imagine that the
series would be so well received, even more so, nobody could imagine that Zhao Wei
would become so famous. “Seeing Zhao Wei’s quick rise to stardom, I was always
observing on the sideline; at a certain level, I can be viewed as “elder”. Because of the
rise to fame from Xiao Hu Dui, being seen as pop idol, being noticed … because having
experienced it, therefore when I saw Zhao Wei encountering set back, I would feel
really bad for her as well as understand her.”
Everyone’s life has ups and downs. “How do you describe your current phase ?” I
asked Youpeng.
“I am currently in a more stable situation; next I hope to be able to go higher.”
Speaking about reunion, can’t help but to long for Xiao Hu Dui’s reunion.
But perhaps the wait will be very long, just as Youpeng said “Can’t put up a show,
can’t be rushed; we all feel that it’s a very touching thing to be able to grow up with
2 generations of people. Classic has to be put into classic’s place. Xiao Hu Dui
having a concert, producing new album is not necessarily a nice thing; instead it
could damage a good thing.”
Therefore, we all have to be patient, because it’s worth the wait.

Speaking about reunion, can’t help but to long for Xiao Hu Dui’s reunion.
But perhaps the wait will be very long, just as Youpeng said “Can’t put up a show,
can’t be rushed; we all feel that it’s a very touching thing to be able to grow up with
2 generations of people. Classic has to be put into classic’s place. Xiao Hu Dui
having a concert, producing new album is not necessarily a nice thing; instead it
could damage a good thing.”
Therefore, we all have to be patient, because it’s worth the wait.
